Aultman Medical Group – Audiology specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss for both adults and children, including infants.

The doctors of audiology at Aultman Medical Group – Audiology are hearing professionals trained specifically to measure hearing loss and rehabilitate the hearing impaired. In addition to conducting tests and providing hearing aid services, they help people adjust to hearing loss, train on the use of hearing instruments and teach communication strategies.

Hearing disorders can result from a variety of causes, such as trauma at birth, viral infections, genetic disorders, exposure to loud noise, certain medications or aging.

Common symptoms include occasional or constant ringing or popping in the ears, as well as a sensation of ear blockage. Vertigo, imbalance or dizziness may also indicate an ear disorder. Any hearing loss, whether sudden, long-standing or asymmetric, should be further evaluated. Other symptoms may include difficulty communicating in one-on-one situations or frequent ear infections. Studies have shown that untreated hearing loss can lead to anxiety, depression, frustration and feelings of isolation. With children, hearing problems can cause difficulties with language development and learning.

Hearing health and quality of life are closely related to many common medical conditions. Hearing loss is often related to conditions like diabetes, dementia, risk of falls, heart disease, cognitive decline, aging, vision loss and kidney disease. Aultman Medical Group – Audiology takes the entire patient into consideration when discussing their hearing health and when making recommendations for treatment, in order to provide personal and family support throughout the entire diagnostic and treatment process.

Professional audiologic services at Aultman Medical Group – Audiology include comprehensive case history, hearing evaluation and diagnosis; lifestyle-focused treatment and consultation; fitting of hearing devices, Bluetooth accessories and FM technology; multiple device styles and manufacturers in various price ranges; real-ear measurements using Audioscan/Verifit; routine hearing aid maintenance; custom noise protection, swim plugs, and musician's ear pieces; hearing device supplies including batteries and chargers; rehabilitation and counseling; and cerumen (wax) removal and management.

This comprehensive hearing procedure may include otoscopy, pure tone air and bone audiometry, tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, otoacoustic emissions, speech discrimination, speech-in-noise testing, visual response audiometry and conditioned play audiometry.
